Research in cooperation with Wageningen University shows that farmers with a Pure Africa loan make more long term decisions. For instance, by purchasing land to plant trees on instead of chemical fertiliser.
It is our long term goal to import all of our coffee by ourselves. Right now, direct trade is about 40% of our sales. It is a great way to make sure that we pay farmers enough for their coffee. In a usual year a coffee farmer is being paid less than the cost of production. We turn it around. We sit down with farmers and cooperatives. Together we calculate the cost of a kilogram of coffee and make sure to pay a healthy profit margin.
